Our Mission

SELF is wellness you can trust. We help you take good care of yourself, your loved ones, and your community. No matter the platform, our work reflects this service-driven mission and the core values of inclusivity, accuracy, autonomy, and empathy. We recognize that wellness is as much about self-expression and self-compassion as it is about workout classes and healthy eating; that it’s not all-or-nothing; and that every person’s individual goals for wellness are different, and that’s great. We also recognize that personal health is intimately connected to community health, and that better health outcomes often require systemic change. We’re all in this together, and SELF is here for you.

SELF reaches over 20 million people each month across a wide range of platforms, including web, video, and social media. SELF is recognized as a global thought leader in health content and has won numerous awards, including a National Magazine Award, Webby’s People’s Voice award, MM&M Gold Award; plus appeared on Adweek’s Hot List and Ad Age’s Publisher’s A-List. SELF’s Editor in Chief has been honored as Digital Editor of the Year by the 2018 Folio: Digital Awards, as well as a 2018 Changemaker by Digiday.

Who We Are

The SELF editorial team is composed of a diverse group of individuals with a wide range of reporting and editing backgrounds. The varying viewpoints and unique opinions of each person on the team help drive SELF’s content to be among the best and most respected health content published today.

Here’s a look at our team’s leadership:

Leta Shy - Editor in Chief

Leta Shy was named editor-in-chief of SELF in May 2021. In her role, she is responsible for developing and creating the wellness brand’s content across all platforms including digital, video and social.

Shy’s appointment as editor-in-chief marked her return to the brand following a brief stint as global commerce category director of health, beauty, and fitness for Condé Nast’s consumer marketing division. Before that she had twice served as interim editor-in-chief, as well as executive editor, and deputy editor of SELF.

Shy began her editorial career in 2005 at Huntsworth Health before spending several years in multiple roles at PopSugar Fitness. She originally joined Condé Nast and SELF in 2015. Prior to being named editor-in-chief, Shy developed and oversaw SELF’s editorial vision across all digital platforms, and was responsible for managing partnerships, events, and large editorial initiatives including SELF’s ASME-nominated 2019 Black Maternal Mortality series, and SELF’s September 2020 cover exploring systemic racism in the fitness industry titled, What It Means to Be Black in Fitness.

She currently lives in LA with her partner and daughter, and will be relocating to New York in 2022.

Zahra Barnes - Executive Editor

Zahra Barnes joined SELF in November 2015, working on the Culture and Health teams before becoming Health Director in November 2019. She was named Executive Editor in August 2020. She has spent her career as a reporter and editor covering women's lives with a focus on wellness.

Zahra specializes in sexual, reproductive, and mental health, all with the goal of destigmatizing these topics and highlighting issues in underserved communities. She’s passionate about exposing the systemic and institutional flaws that lead to health disparities for marginalized people, as well as providing service that helps readers navigate these systems for the best mental and physical health outcomes possible.

When Zahra’s not working, you can find her watching scary movies, eating salted caramel gelato mixed with Phish Food (life-changing combination), and enjoying time at home with her partner and perfect ginger tabby, Sonny.

Amy Eisinger, M.A., C.P.T. - Digital Director

Amy is an A.C.E.-certified personal trainer, PROnatal prenatal and postpartum specialist, and the digital director of SELF. She is a native Floridian who has been living in New York City for over a decade writing, editing, and doing all things digital. She received her B.A. in English and Classics from the University of Florida, and her M.A. in Journalism from New York University.

Her work has been published in the NY Daily News, Washington Post, The Knot, L.A. Times, Cosmopolitan, and Greatist, among others. When she's not at work, Amy enjoys running, yoga, and spending time with her partner, daughter, and dog.

Kenny Thapoung, Associate Director of Audience Development

Kenny Thapoung joined SELF as the Social Media Manager in November 2015. In 2018, he expanded his role to Associate Director of Audience Development where he began working on newsletter and SEO strategy for the brand. He has a B.A. in Magazine Journalism from Temple University in Philadelphia. Prior to SELF, he worked at other publications including Women’s Health, Glamour, and Marie Claire.

If Kenny isn’t in his kitchen experimenting with new Asian recipes, he’s running, biking, or exploring different neighborhoods in New York City. He’ll never say no to a horror movie—as long as you let him cover his ears during the scary parts.
